Tembec is the first and largest forest product company in Canada to make a company-wide commitment to seek FSC certification on all of their forest management units.
“As the public owns the land we operate on, it is extremely important that we manage their forests to the highest standard. That is why Tembec chose FSC certification.”– Dennis Rounsville, Executive Vice President, Tembec
As one of Canada's leading integrated forest products companies, Tembec was the first and largest forest products company in Canada to make a company-wide commitment to seek FSC certification on all of their forest management units.
In 2000, during a time of political strife between environmentalists and loggers, World Wildlife Fund Canada (WWF) and Tembec sat down to discuss a peaceful and profitable solution to protecting and managing Canada's forests. WWF encouraged Tembec to look seriously at the newly emerging Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) as a framework for their forest conservation efforts and to have one of their forests certified to FSC's rigorous forest management standards.
Tembec assessed the benefits of FSC, recognizing that FSC certification would provide their organization with the opportunity to build on their relationships with First Nations and environmental organizations, create additional value for customers and increase public awareness of well-managed forests.
In January 2001, Tembec responded to WWF Canada's suggestion and returned with an unprecedented offer to seek FSC-certification for ALL of their forestry operations across Canada.
Immediately, Tembec forest managers embarked on modifying forest management plans and activities to protect wildlife, engage forest-dependent communities and First Nations and ultimately certified all public forest licenses under company management, an area that at its peak totalled more than 13 million hectares (32 million acres) across Canada.
Tembec's leadership paved the way for other industry players to adopt FSC's forest management standards and proved that with committed staff, support from external organizations and research it is possible to have healthy forests and strong communities.
Tembec is one of Canada's leading integrated forest products companies involved in the production of wood products, pulp, paper, paperboard, and chemical products.
