World Wildlife Fund Canada

WWF Canada is one of the founders of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and for the past generation has been fighting for Peace in the Woods.

“FSC has the highest environmental standard for forest management of any certification system in the world.”– Monte Hummel, President Emeritus, WWF Canada

The World Wildlife Fund Canada (WWF Canada) is one of Canada’s leading conservation organizations whose mission is to stop the degradation of the planet’s natural environment & build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature. In 1993, WWF Canada became one of the founding members of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) to leverage the power of the marketplace by giving consumers a simple way to identify products from well-managed forests.

For decades loggers and environmentalists had been at war in the woods. Some thought that tougher environmental rules would drive costs higher, mills would close, jobs would be lost, that local towns would suffer and few businesses believed they were responsible for where their timber came from. Others saw an opportunity.By sitting down with forward-looking forestry companies to see if a better solution might be possible, WWF Canada found that not all of their differences were irreconcilable. That realization opened the door to a deal. This deal eventually led to the forestry company, Tembec to give up hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of their commercially valuable forests and commit to certify all its forests across the country, an area totalling almost 13 million hectares.

WWF Canada was working not just in the woods but all the way down to the supply chain. WWF developed a key partnership with paper manufacturer Domtar to develop and launch their EarthChoice, the first comprehensive line of FSC-certified papers. To help Domtar counter the misperceptions that environmentally responsible paper must be expensive, lower quality or hard to obtain, WWF Canada’s Hadley Archer went from community to community, explaining to Domtar customers just what kind of impact they could make by buying FSC-certified products. The reception was great, EarthChoice sales shot up from 45,000 tons of paper in 2005 to 400,000 tons in 2009, accounting for 20 per cent of Domtar’s paper sales.

Today more than 40 million hectares of forests across the country have been certified to FSC's rigorous social and environmental standards, protecting wildlife habitat, supporting local communities, and guaranteeing that we will be able to harvest wood, generation after generation.

WWF Canada's vision for a sustainable future

WWF Canada believes that consumers and organization can help secure a future for the world's forests, and the people and animals that rely on forests, by purchasing products with the FSC label and questioning where their forest products come from.
