VF Corporation has partnered with environmental non-profit Canopy to safeguard biological diversity by making fashion more forest-friendly. The initiative, called Canopy Style, aims to stop using ancient and endangered forests in producing tree-derived fabrics like rayon by the end of 2017.

“We’re really focused on climate change and making sure we reduce our impact,” said Letitia Webster, VF’s vice-president of global corporate sustainability. “One of the big issues that we wanted to begin to curtail was the destruction of important forests.”

The policy states that “For the purchase of indirect materials such as paper and packaging, we strive to use products made with recycled fiber whenever possible and believe in the use of Responsible Forest Management Practices. We promote the use of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified paper and fiber, and look to elevate all third party forestry management certification systems by requiring additional supplier information to assess risk of these other sources.”
