The International Generic Indicators (IGIs) are a suite of indicators, based on the new FSC Principles and Criteria (P&C) (version 5), to act as a starting point for FSC Canada’s national Forest Management standard.

The IGIs underwent a first public consultation in the spring of 2013, and are currently undergoing the second round of public consultation.  Given the central role that IGIs will play in fostering global consistency and rigour in the FSC system, dedicated public consultation is vital to ensuring that the IGIs are both robust and functional.

The methodology for preparing the second draft was a systematic and iterative process in which the IGI Working Group, revised and proposed indicators for each criterion. A set of filter questions was applied, asking whether each indicator was:

  • Globally Applicable
  • Auditable
  • Performance based
  • Written in clear, simple language
  • Redundant
  • Consider Scale, Intensity and Risk

Once feedback is received from this second draft, a final version of the IGIs will be released in June 2014. At this point, FSC Canada will transfer these final indicators to our national Forest Management Standard (see draft transfer procedure document below).
