The recent FSC North American Conference brought together over 150 stakeholders in Nashville, Tennessee, to reflect on FSC’s 30 years of impact and map out its future in the region. With a full two-day agenda, including dynamic panel discussions, and breakout sessions, participants engaged in meaningful conversations about progress and challenges in the region.

The plenary session, titled "Rooted in Progress: Reflecting on 30 Years of FSC in North America and Cultivating Future Growth," served as a key highlight. This session featured three panels:

  1. Where We Began: Experts including Indigenous leader Peggy Smith, Richard Donovan, and Galen Smith from Collins Pine Companies offered insights into FSC’s origins and early development in North America.
  2. FSC Now: Cliff Wallis, John Fenderson, Lorraine Rekmans, and Paige Goff from Domtar provided current perspectives on FSC's role in balancing environmental, social, and economic needs across forests and supply chains.
  3. The Future of FSC: Sarah Billig, FSC US’ President, Subhra Bhattacharjee, FSC International’s new Director General, and Monika Patel, incoming President of FSC Canada, led a forward-looking discussion on the organization’s vision for expanding its impact and influence.

On the second day, participants turned their attention to FSC’s global priorities.

Exiting Director General, Kim Carstensen, shared updates on the organization’s strategic plan, emphasizing key priorities and directions for the coming years. Lieske van Santen, Global Network Director, introduced Sarah Kutulakos as the new North American Regional Director, highlighting FSC's strengthened commitment to the region. Additionally, Guille Garza, Membership Director, offered an overview of the upcoming 2025 General Assembly in Panama, encouraging members to actively participate in shaping FSC’s future through this important governance event.

The day concluded with chamber meetings, where members discussed regional priorities and how they align with those of FSC’s global membership, setting the stage for closer integration between local and international goals.

Overall, the conference provided a valuable platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas, share challenges, and reaffirm FSC's dedication to sustainability, Indigenous rights, and robust market engagement across North America. With new leadership and clear strategic direction, FSC North America is poised for continued impact and growth.
